Artist Information : Martin Cheek

Category : Pottery/Ceramics
Preferred age groups : All
Maximum group size : 15 at a time, but can rotate
Workshop Proposals : Stage 1: The pupils draw ideas for the theme of the mosaic on paper. This could relate to a current project the pupils are already involved in i.e. dinosaurs, farm yard animals etc. or it could be managed as a school competition, the winning drawing(s) being taken as the theme of the mosaic.
Stage 2: I visit the school and get the children to draw their designs onto tiles of clay I have prepared. The designs are then cut out as shapes and taken away to be fired. The following week I return with the individual fired pieces which the children paint using a non toxic "paint your own pottery" glaze. I then glaze fire them.
Stage 3: The finished tiles can then be incorporated into the chosen mosaic design.
Stage 4: I return to the school to hang the finished mosaic. The children can see the results of their own creative work and the school can have its very own unveiling ceremony!
The project is very flexible and can be adapted to your needs - any number of creative ideas can be incorporated. I am very happy to discuss ideas with no obligation to proceed. If you are interested in exploring this further, please do not hesitate to contact AIS.
